25 Years of making....

February 28th 1991 was when I started my tiny jewellery business in Birmingham's historic Jewellery Quarter.
http://www.jewelleryquarter.net/I rented a very small studio space on Warstone Lane which cost £17 a week! I was a recipient of the then Governments 'Enterprise Allowance Scheme' which gave support for the first 12 months to new businesses.  During the next few years I moved around the Quarter a few times usually sharing a studio with another maker - for most of the time that was friend Penny Williams who still has a workshop in Hockley.

We used to exhibit at trade fairs together such as the Spring Fair at the NEC & British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate.
I still show with Penny at Worcestershire Guild events usually the Malvern Spring & Autumn Garden Shows.

Businesses in the Jewellery quarter are still my suppliers for much of my materials: casting, etching, bullion & base metals all come from companies I have used since I first started out. Thankfully most things are easy enough to post now I am down in Cornwall!

Some of my early jewellery designs are still popular...

My business has changed a little since the early beginnings.  I now have my own retail outlet & sell most of my work from there or via craft shows.  I do still supply selected gallery outlets around the UK. I am a member of the Guild of Ten in Truro & the Cornwall Crafts Association.  My husband Tim is now fully involved too - running the gallery in St Ives which allows me to get on with the making side of things!

So what next...? Well I fully intend to continue for quite a few more years yet!! I now have a nice tidy more spacious studio space from which I plan to offer small workshops in metalwork & jewellery techniques (details to follow very soon...)
This year I already have several events booked including the Malvern Spring Garden, Cornwall Open Studios & the Contemporary Craft Festival at Bovey Tracey.
New ideas for work are never in short supply just the time to do them all!!!

Finally a big thank you to all those customers over the years who have supported me by purchasing my work & offering encouragement.

Colours of Cornwall Show

Alison & I have had a lovely week exhibiting at the St Ives Arts Club...it was the first time we have shown together.  The venue really worked for us - such a great location right on the seafront (it was very tempting to keep peeking out of the window to check the waves/sand/birds.  We did have a little routine where we would close up at the end of each day & just sit upstairs watching the tide come in/go out - really enjoyable!

Over the week we have had nearly 500 visitors through the door - many of whom we had not met before. As it was half term the town was quite busy with several dogs joining the people visiting the show!  Lots of very positive comments & a number of sales :-)

We both also managed to develop some new ideas during the time we were there; Alison has some new colour combinations inspired by the changing light & colours everyday on the beach & I have done 2 sketch books with some Troika influenced designs for metalwork.

If you were unable to come along this time we are planning another joint show in October this year with the theme 'A Cornish Winter' October 8th - 14th.  More details nearer the time of course.

Hopefully the photographs will give you a taste of the exhibition.....
